Rehabilitation of EWR CTA Entrance and Frontage Bridges (PANYNJ)

Rehabilitation of the CTA Entrance and Frontage Bridges N1, N2, N5, and N6, Newark Liberty International Airport, NJ

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) selected four bridges at the entrance to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for rehabilitation. Improvements included drainage, pavement, joint, abutment, bridge railing, and deck repairs. Work on Bridges N1 and N2 required multiple lane closures on Express Road, which is the main recirculation road at EWR.

SIMCOwas requested to design the Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) for all necessary closures. In addition to a number of standard closures, this project required the design of a temporary roadway for drivers attempting to recirculate to the terminals because of the closures on Express Road. All alternatives were investigated before selecting the safest and most efficient option.

SIMCO provided both the MPT and Civil design plans for this temporary roadway.  The Civil design plans included curb removal, roadway grading, and pavement design.

SIMCOwas also requested to complete additional work during the construction phase of the project. SIMCO provided contract drawings for additional pavement repairs on nearby ramps. Also, PANYNJ requested SIMCO’s MPT design services during sensitive construction phases. Ongoing work in adjacent areas due to the Terminal A Redevelopment project required constant monitoring and changes during the construction phase.

The services provided for this project included the following:

  • Maintenance and Protection of Traffic Design
  • Roadway Design
  • Traffic Engineering Construction Services
