Design of Three Hudson Line Sub-Stations

SIMCO provided site, civil, and utility design services for the construction of three traction power substations along the Metro-North Hudson Line in Riverdale, Tarrytown, and Croton. The sub-station replacements were needed to address damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The civil designs incorporate new FEMA 100-year Advisory Base Flood Elevations (ABFE) and MTA adjustments to address potential future storms and tidal surges. The new sub-stations are raised approximately 6 feet above the existing grade as a resiliency measure against future storms.

SIMCO’s role in the design effort for this project is to provide all civil engineering design and construction support services, which are on-going.

Design activities included:

  • Analysis and recommendation of the proposed elevations of the new substations in accordance with updated 100-year FEMA ABFE and MTA adjustments for tidal surge
  • Location analysis and discipline coordination for the design of a new Crews’ Quarters with office, conference room, lavatory, locker, and shower facilities
  • Coordination with mechanical and plumbing disciplines relative to water service and treatment of effluent
  • Alternative sub-station location analysis
  • Design of 180 linear feet of variable height Gabion basket retaining wall
  • Final Contract Plans and Specifications, including multi-discipline coordination
  • Site grading, drainage, soil erosion, and sediment control
  • Parking analysis and final layout for the Riverdale Station commuter parking lot to minimize the impact of a reduced number of commuter spaces during staged reconstruction and final parking lot configuration
